Purchased somewhere in the Phoenix area, $8.99, 13% alcohol. Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah & Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark magenta garnet color, very narrow rim. Huge blackberry bramble aroma up front, then some pepper & vanilla. Juicy, sweet dark berry fruit on the palate, velvety tannins & subtle acidity. Lots of sweet vanilla throughout, jammy berry finish. Great with seasoned London Broil, which brought out even more vanilla & oak. Simple – and simply delicious. An elegant fruit bomb if there ever was one!

Purchased at Sprouts Farmers Market in Tempe AZ, $8.99, 13% alcohol. Vivid pale salmon ruby color, yeasty aroma with a hint of strawberry. Jolly Rancher type strawberry candy on the palate, fortunately without being sugary! Somewhat heavier, more mouthfilling body than I expected. Not something I’d go out of my way for, though.

botto didn't know they make a rosé

bjwdad Ads for it have been all over my Facebook page, so I thought it was worth a try. The red is still by far the best.

Free small glass, 14.5% alcohol. Medium ruby color, very narrow rim – lighter than I expected for Old Vine. Aromas & flavors of raspberry, other dark berry, vanilla, bramble, pepper & lively oak. Good structure, sweet fruit finish w/ a touch of mineral. Quite nice!

Purchased at Costco in Tempe AZ, $13.99, 14.6% alcohol. Cabernet Sauvignon 49%, Merlot 42%, Petit Verdot 5%, Malbec 3%, Cabernet Franc 1%. I’m assuming this is bulk juice, but two winemakers are listed, Marco DiGiulio and Zach Long. Inky ruby garnet color, no discernible rim. Black cherry & currant on the nose w/ faint notes of herb & wood. All is covered by wonderful, fine dust. More cherry on the palate with other dark berry juice, slightly restrained but nicely supported by medium tannins & solid acidity. Some heat mid-palate & into the finish. Fruit, herbal pepper & dust mingle in the finish. It’s good, but perhaps a bit young right now. Rutherford & Paso Robles are my two favorite “dusty” appellations!

botto Costco has some good value wines and this seems to be one of those. I met Zach Long last year at Girard Winery in Napa: he's Marco di Giulio assistant WM. They also produce Avenel Cellars for Total Wine.

bjwdad Can you confirm that it is indeed bulk juice?

Purchased at Whole Foods in Chandler AZ, $13.99, 13.8% alcohol. Mendocino County 87%, Lake County 13%, made with organic grapes. Beautiful ruby dark ruby garnet color, almost no rim. Dark berry on the nose with hints of green pepper, eucalyptus, oak & mineral. Tart berry juice on the palate on smooth medium tannins & healthy acidity. More youth in the middle – green pepper, etc. The finish warms a bit fruit-wise with a touch of sweetness. This is a fine youngster who needs to mature!

Purchased at Whole Foods in Chandler AZ, $11.99, 14.5% alcohol. Mothers’ Day wine, even though my wife will only take a sip or two… Inky black cherry garnet color, no discernible rim. Prominent chalky granite mineral character on the nose, which I look forward to in Chilean reds! Subdued notes of cherry & other dark berry with some peppery herbal aromas. Ripe, focused jammy berry on the palate, silky medium tannins & racy acidity. Woody middle, very warm fruity finish. There is a “narrowness” to it that I think may broaden with a bit more age to the bottle. Very nice, though!

Purchased at Kokopelli Winery & Bistro in Chandler AZ, $13.75, 12% alcohol. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon (or “Sauvingon,” as on the label), 50% Zinfandel. Medium ruby garnet color, no separation at the rim. Blackberry & raspberry notes on the nose w/ light brambly herb character. Tart dark berry juice on the palate, light body. Minimal tannins & adequate acidity. Surprisingly lengthy finish with delicate berry notes and faint wood & mineral. Interesting minimalist interpretation of two potentially huge varietals.

Purchased at Kokopelli Winery & Bistro in Chandler AZ, $14.25, 12% alcohol. Primarily Riesling, blended with Muscat. Pale straw with a green tint, lightly floral and nutty on the nose. Apple & spice flavors initially, followed by a refreshing citrus bite. Pleasant soft texture, but somewhat lacking in acidity.

rckr1951 I have a friend in Milwaukee that ONLY drink Rheinwine. Didn't realize that you could full fill a total palate with just that classification of wine.
