Appearance: dark purple, slight orange rim. Nose: meaty first nose with savoury black fruits which are slightly mute just now. Overall the fruit is more savoury than the ‘sweet’ bright fruit on the 2005. Beautiful oak yielding pine and cedar notes (later leather and mocha). Palate: slightly tight medium-high grainy tannins (with a structure still waiting to unfold), medium acidity, lovely length and beautifully balanced all round (the high alcohol finds a subtle equilibrium with the wine’s other components). Conclusion: 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 3% Malbec, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, the wine spent 17 months in new French oak and really needs further ageing to show its full potential. Try from 2011 onwards. Although a little mute, this will still be very, very good.
