The more I learn about this winery the more I like it. Their Niebbolo impressed me big style when i tried it last year, and this was a brilliant accompaniment to chilli (not the really fierce variety) as it's smooth, immediately fruit quality stood up the the dry spice assault very well. The nose has a green pepper vegetal quality with a hint of acetone which is not that enticing. But there is some sweet baked fruit which bodes well. That is borne out by the taste, which is so smooth and silky that it pleases almost regardless of taste, in the way that velvet feels good regardless of the colour. But I like the sweet start of the plummy fruit and can live with slightly over-green tinge which accompanies it because the whole experience is so silky and the price is modest. Decent balance and gentle tannins make up an interesting and good take on this single varietal.

rckr1951 I don't know, I'm not a big fan of this style of PS. It is interesting in that this has a totally new flavor profile - ie...the "over(?)-green tinge" - but I think I'll stick to big whallop type I'm used to.

moose I think the distinct green tinge is particular to this wine - but I think it may also suggest the wine will last well, and might improve further. But like some Australian Durifs i have had, this varietal can certainly deliver the big bang.

rckr1951 Interesting that you use the ancestral varietal name of the wine. I've not seen the name on a bottle of wine here in the states ever.

moose Only in Australian wines in my experience - often blended with Shiraz but also as a single. One of my regular suppliers has 4 Durifs on offer, including a single-varietal rose - which I have never tried. Durif is quite popular here - but Petite Sirah probably gets less exposure than in the US and is certainly less widely available. The Durifs aren't subtle - but do pack their punch.
